NEWSLETTER #0909
June 10, 2009

2009 turned out to be a highly successful year for the Salone Internazionale del Mobile – the most important and revered design fair in the world! Despite all the economic doom and gloom, the fair not only impressed with it's offerings, but also boasted the 2nd largest turnout in the 48 year history of the fair! In this newsletter, Bill Fritts contributes a unique insight into Salone del Mobile '09 with his scene report.

We are also excited to announce the launch of our 2010 tour in association with the A+D Museum Los Angeles. Led by A+D Board Member Bill Fritts (Founder/Owner of Intelligent Design), this not–to–be–missed tour is perfect for design lovers and professionals alike. Bill will also be joined by trend reporter Jody Turner (CEO of Culture of Future) and arts consultant Jennifer Jacobs. This tour is for all A+D Museum members as well as the general public.

Please take a look at our latest Milan webpage, as well as download the A+D itinerary and form to get started!

What Global Economic Recession?
design innovation continues at the Milan Furniture Fair 2009.
by Bill Fritts

The sun is high in the April Italian sky while the world's largest design forum is alight with a combination of well known masters and unknown young emerging designers all showing cleverness and substance in a commentary on the worlds state of affairs through their work. This years surprisingly good show can be boiled down into three categories: sustainability, nostalgia and material innovation. Although no one thought they would be, the city and fairgrounds were full with people from all corners, hungry for a design response to a difficult past 12 months. A shrinking global village, coalescing culturalism and continued consumerism drove fresh responses in this annual carnival of design. We wade through the noise of thousands of hype chairs, sofas, tables and such, amongst metric tons of tableware, lighting, decorative accessories and installation art to find within a small but critical mass of enduring quality design. 2009 showed us that financial panic can not stifle the creative spirit nor shutter the industries top producers. It also showed us that there is never an end to starry eyed newcomers who will delight with heretofore unimagined creations.

Once the parties were recovered from, the proclamations silenced and the forests of dailies and leaflets (hopefully) recycled we think Arik Levy said it best, " the economic situation is like a hurricane. It washes out everything that is not really anchored..."
