The Jacobs Group™ creative travel presents ...

MRF
DESTINATION : MARFA, TX

Marfa is a small town of scarcely over 2000 people and most people know of it only as the location for filming the 1956 film "Giant " and most recently "There Will be Blood". But others know Marfa as the minimalist art mecca established by Donald Judd in 1971.

After Judd's death in 1994, two major institutions were formed: the Chinati Foundation, which includes the work of Judd, Flavin, Chamberlain, among others and are housed at Fort Russell; and The Judd Foundation, which preserves at least 15 properties in which Judd lived and worked throughout the town – his private residence, ranch, architecture studio, Cobb House, print studio, and more.

Judd was as passionate and discriminating about the context in which his work was installed as about the design of the work itself. He was drawn to the open, luminous space of the native landscape as well as its rural agricultural, industrial, and military architectural forms. Upon visiting, you will certainly be struck at how his use of materials and shape are intimately intertwined in the context of the barren surroundings.

The community of Marfa is alive with art enthusiasts traveling to visit from all over the world – visiting not only Chinati and the Judd Foundation, but the galleries and non profits which are thriving here. In 2008, Marfa also unveiled the Marfa Film Festival at the newly created state–of–the-art Goode–Crowley theater.

We hope you will consider allowing The Jacobs Group™ to customize an insiders' look at this contemporary art mecca, thriving in the Texas desert!

MORE ON MARFA

Donald Judd moved to Marfa from New York City in 1971. After renting summer houses for a couple of years he bought two large hangars that were part of the decomissioned Fort D.A. Russell, and started to permanently install his art. While this started with his building in New York, the buildings in Marfa (now The Block, Judd Foundation) allowed him to install his works on a larger scale. In 1976 he bought the first of two ranches that would become his primary places of residence, continuing a long love affair with the desert landscape surrounding Marfa:
